IN FOCUS: Dr Martens AW20

Just what the Doctor ordered! A fresh serving of timeless styles from the esteemed shoemaker.

Dr. Martens are about as legitimate as it gets in both the realms of craftsmanship and having roots in subculture. The outfit began life at the turn of the 20th century in Wollaston, Northamptonshire. A shoe making powerhouse once dubbed 'the shoe making capital of the world' and home to the British Footwear Association to boot (pun may or may not have been intended).

Over the next 6 decades, Dr. Martens would establish themselves at the very heart of the British shoe industry producing dependable and hard-wearing work boots for the masses, and a whole host of worldwide subcultures who have gone onto make the boot a symbol of expression and part of a uniform.

2020 sees the brand celebrate 60 years of their iconic boot and have showcased its enduring style and dependability collaborating with some of the best contemporary brands and creators within the global community.

Celebrating six decades of Dr. Martens, this year Dr Martens create a small run of footwear in their original Cobbs Lane factory — using some of the finest leathers they could find. Essex is a vegetable-tanned leather from Horween, a Chicago-based company that's been turning out premium quality, handcrafted hides since 1905. Vegetable-tanned leather ages naturally over time, so with each wear, these 1461 shoes will develop marks and character. And over time, become your own unique pair. The shoes are tagged with a Horween leather label and a gold foil-embossed sock liner.

Alongside the offerings from Horween Dr Martens teams up with storied Scottish textile institution Harris Tweed to work their signature fabric into the the 1460 Boot.

For those unaware Harris Tweed hails from the long, barren archipelago on the far northwest tip of Scotland, Europe and is home to every weaver, dyer, blender, carder, spinner, warper, finisher and inspector of Harris Tweed cloth. No part of the process takes place elsewhere. From royalty and landed gentry to Hollywood icons and the finest designers of couture, this humble cloth, produced by the skilled craftspeople of the Outer Hebrides, became a wardrobe staple, a must-have item for discerning customers across the globe. In its rise to prominence, Harris Tweed cloth scaled Everest and graced the Silver Screen, sailed the Seven Seas and showed off on red carpets and catwalks. By the middle of the 20th century, the Clo Mor (Gaelic for 'The Big Cloth') had secured its status as a true and timeless classic textile.

Now in 2020 Dr Martens joins the illustrious list, two institutions famed for their dedication to quality and detail. Offered here in a contemporary darker weave to compliment the black leather uppers of the 1460 boot or in a more traditional earthy yet vibrant weave that pairs nicely with the oxblood leather upper.

Crafted at Dr Martens original Cobb lane site the 1461 shoe utilizes suede's from esteemed Leeds based tannery CF Steads opting for a 'Desert Oasis' fashion suede with a soft and chunky handle, as opposed to Stead's more classic, formal suede's. The raw material is specially selected and tanned to achieve a relaxed, sporty look with a rugged nap. The longer nap and more open structure gives the leather a unique texture and casual look but still retains the richness, presented here in a very wearable black shade. Inside the shoe were treated to a plush leather collar and footbed with foil branding. Whilst on the outside Dr Martens rugged and dependable Air-cushioned sole handles just about anything you can throw at it.
